Ozan Karaca Wins Bursary for Earning Highest UMS Points

Earlier this week the Ministry of Education announced the award of bursaries for Turkish Cypriots who graduated from A-Level programmes in 2018 based on the UMS points of the top 10 achievers. Congratulations to Class of 2018 ESK graduate Ozan Karaca who received 1694 UMS points, placing him first on the island! This is a wonderful accomplishment and comes as no surprise as Ozan had received four A*’s (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics). Ozan is currently in the UK attending the renowned UCL.

We are very proud and wish Ozan continued success in his academic career.

Colonel John Hughes-Wilson Donates Original Manuscript

Colonel John Hughes-Wilson, a notable author who worked for British Intelligence through a long military career, visited our campus on Tuesday.  He spoke with Sixth Form students on how the First World War advanced technologies that we use today, and spoke briefly about the Ottoman Empire.  Students were intrigued and shared stories they heard from their grandparents, and great-grandparents.  As an author of 20 books on intelligence history, and military history, Colonel John Hughes-Wilson has also generously donated original manuscripts of his works to add to our ever-growing library.  We have formed the Hughes-Wilson Collection which we will hold open to scholars to access on these themes.  It is a distinct honour to have such a prestigious, and original scholarly collection in the ESK library.

ESK Featured as the Cover Story of International School Magazine

The English School of Kyrenia has been featured on the cover of International School Magazine.  The magazine is distributed across international schools in the 157 countries.

The cover photo is from the Model United Nations (MUN) that was held at our school.  The article written by Principal Hector MacDonald is titled ‘On the legacy of conflict’.  The article highlights the school’s conscious effort to unify communities, including hosting MUN which brings together and represents 33 different nations.

“Perhaps through our own openness to listen to young people and their families we might be re-expressing the absorbing comment of the thirteenth-century poet and mystic Rumi: ‘Yesterday I was so clever so I wanted to change the world.  Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.'”

Ten Exceptional Years

The English School of Kyrenia opened in 2008, however, the story of ESK starts long before that.

On January 27th, 1964, Mr Hasan Nevzat, Fehim Nevzat’s Father, along with Mr Behzat Gursel and Mr Mahmut Islamoglu opened the first English School for Turkish Cypriots to ensure they received a high-quality education.  That school is open today and has been renamed Turk Maarif Koleji.

Once the plan to open an accredited school was implemented, finding land for the school was important and a very meticulous process.  In the end, the decision to build a school on the Bellapais land seemed like destiny.  The land belonged to Fehim Efendi, the grandfather of Fehim Nevzat.  In 1934 Fehim Efendi donated the land to a charitable foundation also know as Vakif.  Upon looking at the history of the land Fehim and Bilge Nevzat discovered the connection, and the decision became simple.  The land in Bellapais was the perfect space for their school.

As everything fell in place, ESK was ready to open in 2008 and for the first year, the school was located on Mustafa Cagatay Caddesi.  A year later The English School of Kyrenia moved to the permanent campus in Bellapais.  Since then, the campus has grown substantially with the addition of the Eco-Building and the Boarding House.

Today, founders Fehim and Bilge Nevzat claim they have 171 children and 958 grandchildren.  A family business carries a different meaning to them- they attribute the success of ESK to their advisors, staff, and the students.

The late Hasan Nevzat’s dream to begin a world-class school quickly became a reality we now call The English School of Kyrenia.  Dreams have come true with ESK graduates attending top Universities around the world including the University of Cambridge, UCL, LSE, Imperial, and Smith College (to name a few).

We look forward to see the accomplishments for the next hundred years.

“The success at ESK is prestigious for the country”

Serhat Incirli from Kibris Postasi published an article about the successes at ESK. The article is in Turkish, however, the second half of the article in English is shared below:

“The English School of Kyrenia is delighted to share news of the remarkable success of this year’s graduating class. Class of 2018 Graduate, Mustafa Al-Baldawi gained all A* grades in his three A-Level subjects of Maths, Chemistry and Biology. He has been accepted to study Medicine at the University of Cambridge. He earned 1 of only 21 international places available for Medicine at the world-renowned university – a truly world-class achievement. Mustafa said his advice to younger students is: “Always aim high and never think that something is impossible. Turn your dreams into goals, then work hard to make your goals a reality.”

Mustafa’s classmates also had a very successful year.

Gülten Dana has gained a place to study LLB Law at The London School of Economics (LSE).

Tumen Dambiev and Ozan Karaca will be attending University College London, amongst many other placements (listed below). Ozan achieved an amazing four A* grades at A-Level in his chosen subjects of Maths, Chemistry, Biology & Physics!

Defne Kansu, who also achieved the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Gold Medal Award, will be attending the University of Bath to study Management in September.”

A*” A Level derecesi elde etti…

Mustafa Al – Badawi’nin yanı sıra, sınıf arkadaşı Gülten Dana, yine Dünya çapında bir eğitim markası olan The London School of Economics’te (LSE) hukuk okuma hakkı elde etti…

Tumen Dambievve Ozan Karaca adlı öğrenciler, yine Dünya listelerinin ilk sıralarındaki University College London’da eğitim görecek… Ozan Karaca’nın Matematik, Kimya, Biyoloji ve Fizik’te dört tane “A*”A Level derecesi aldığını da eklemeden geçmeyeceğim…

Defne Kansu adlı bir ESK öğrencimiz “Duke of Edinburgh’s International Gold MedalAward” adlı ödülü kazanmanın yanı sıra, University of Bath’ta işletme okuyacak…

ESK’yı, yöneticilerini, öğretmenlerini, öğrencilerini ve ailelerini yürekten kutluyorum…

The New Entrance to the Library

ESK student Hazal Otun Say spent four weeks this summer revamping the library door, and the finished product is amazing! Hazal’s goal was to give students the feeling of curiosity and possibility as they entered the library.

Her plan for the entrance was extremely well thought out. She picked coy fish because they symbolize good fortune, they show determination in the Chinese culture, and Buddhists believe they symbolize courage. The details around the door include photos of influential people in the world, and in Cyprus. As a thank you, Ms Ucarturk held an unveiling and thank you party for Hazal.

IB Graduating Class Results

IB Diploma results were released on Thursday 5th July 2018. We are very pleased to announce the success of our IB graduates. This year ESK’s average score was 35.8 points which is well above the global average of 29.8.

These results would place ESK 5th among small cohort IB Diploma schools in the UK! With such wonderful IB results we eagerly await the A-Level results of the rest of our graduates in August.

All of the students passed the IBD, and each one’s individual score was above the IB global average. Congratulations are due to Ozge with 39 points, Daniel with 37 points, Jaroslaw with 36 points, Deniz, and Defne with 35 points each, and to all the students for exceeding the global average.

ESK Principal Hector MacDonald said, “Year upon year our highly aspirational students increase their performance by outstanding amounts. To have risen by 1.9 points on average is world-class! Our thanks go to Dr Altay Nevzat and his team of highly committed and experienced teachers who have further enhanced our reputation as a top-notch independent school”.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Awardee: Defne

Congratulations to ESK Year 13 student Defne on achieving the Duke of Edinburgh International Gold Award. Defne is the first Gold awardee from the Turkish Cypriot community.

In order to achieve the Gold Award you must have completed the prior two timescales, and then complete a volunteering, physical and skills, expedition, and residential section.  It is a very high honour, and extremely impressive to achieve this prestigious award (especially in high school)!

The British High Commissioner to Cyprus, His Excellency Mr Stephen Lillie, presented Defne with her prestigious award at his residence in Nicosia at a ceremony on Friday July 6th. The ESK family is proud and wishes Defne every success as she sets off to University in the UK in September.

Graduating Class of 2018
